There will be a Winter Arts Festival in St Helens next year. Break O’Day Mayor, Sarah Schmerl as Patron of the Bay of Fires Arts Association announced today that the Festival would happen over the Queen’s Birthday long weekend in June 2014.
The Festival will grow from the already successful Bay of Fires Art Prize and the new Bay of Fires Arts Market and include performing events making a complete arts celebration. Music will be the main addition with a number of performances in a number of venues throughout the town spread out over the long weekend. “This is an exciting development and the logical progression for the Bay of Fires Arts Association” said Mayor Schmerl. “We expect it will give our many visitors an added reason to come and stay a bit longer in our beautiful area”
Chris Draffin, President of the Association, took the opportunity to thank the existing sponsors at the launch of the Festival. They included the Break O’Day Council, St Helens Supa IGA, Bed in the Treetops, Gallery Parnella, Mr David Hirst, Josef Chromy Wines, Europcar and Cr Glenn McGuinness. He also thanked the Gales from Crossroads for their enthusiastic support in developing the performing arts concept of the Festival.
“There are excellent opportunities for all local community groups and businesses to jump on board with the Winter Festival. There is much work to be done and funding to be found before everything is finalised” said Mr Draffin. “It has the potential to attract an arts crowd that will continue on to the Dark FOMA festival in Hobart the following week, It could become part of an itinerary”.
